What Does It Mean To Be A Christian? What Does It Mean To Be Saved?
The word Christianity means different things to different people in today’s world. Many people believe that being a Christian simply means being a good person – doing good deeds. This is not true because the Bible tells us that we are not good people (Romans 3:10).
Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and forgave sins (something only God could do). He did all these beautiful things. He was perfect, never committed a single crime (unlike us), yet he had to die a criminal’s death. What was it all for, if salvation is based upon on our deeds?
We Are Saved By Grace Through Faith
It is because salvation is not based on what we do, but in what Christ has done for us, salvation is to be found in the completed work of Jesus Christ (John 14:6).
God required a lamb to atone for our sins, and Jesus was that lamb. In the old-testament God’s chosen people, the children of Israel had to sacrifice animals as an offering for their sins.
Christ’s death on the cross completed this – once and for all.
I, for one, am thankful to God that salvation is not a meritocracy, we are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8).
Christians Are Imperfect People
What non-believers should know about Christians is that we are not perfect people; this is why we follow Jesus – we need Him, and we need the Holy Spirit to take permanent residence in our hearts – God is the one who changes us, He is the one who sanctifies us daily.
A Christian is someone who has been convicted of their sinful nature, repented, and turned their lives over to Jesus – we believe in the Gospel, as it is the power of God onto Salvation.
God gives everyone a chance to repent and turn to Him, He is a forgiving and loving Father – we can trust Him implicitly.
God saved us for good works, not by good works.
Counting The Cost
Being a Christian means submitting yourself to Christ; it is by no means easy to be a Christian in our sinful world. There is a cost to following Christ – we are commanded to die to self, take up our cross and walk, daily.
